Following is an abbreviated version of what we’ve learned and have successfully applied to client web sites. Please feel free to contact Technique Web with any questions, or to begin a search engine marketing plan best suited for your company.
There are thousands of search engines available on the web, but only a handful are utilized by the majority of users. Each search engine has different criteria to determine which sites to list, and in which order they are displayed to the end user. Sometimes search engines partner and share the same search criteria and results listings.
Some search engines send out spiders to index html code and other information, while others aren’t interested in the html code. Many search engines require your site to be submitted for listing consideration and review and some will simply find your site by linking from one site to another.
There are a few types of search sites on the internet.
Standard Search Engines
Popular: Google, AltaVista, Excite, Lycos, AllTheWeb, HotBot, AOL, MSN
These search sites display web sites by using predetermined criteria. From the type of content and format, to keyword usage, link popularity, and alt tag information, there are many techniques that need to be applied to the pages of your site for the greatest possible chance of being found by these search engine spiders.
Search Directories
Popular: Yahoo!, Open Directory (DMOZ)
Most view Yahoo! as a search engine, but it’s actually categorized as a search directory. A directory simply lists sites in a similar fashion as the yellow pages. Users can search by category or keyword, but ultimately the listings are displayed using the catalog system.
Pay-for-listing Search Engines:
Popular: Yahoo!, Overture
Some search engines require a fee to be listed within their database of indexed sites, without any guarantee of being included within the results listings.
Yahoo! requires a yearly fee to cover the cost of having a person review your site, but doesn’t guarantee a listing within its database.
Overture is a pay-per-listing search engine which allows your company to bid on keywords most often associated with your business. The more you bid, the higher your listing will be when a user types in the keywords your company bid on.
Although Technique Web does its best to simplify search engine marketing information to interested readers, a true understanding is necessary to be successful. Improper submissions and site optimization techniques can result in your company’s site to be blacklisted. In this situation, your web site will not be listed within the results.
Please make sure you choose an experienced search engine marketing firm before proceeding with the marketing of your company’s web site.
